About the Practice
Twenty-four years.
Now AI-augmented.
The practice.
Legacy Results, Inc. is a 24-year strategic finance practice. The work is board-level: cash architecture, succession-readiness, owner-dependency, customer concentration — the structural decisions that determine whether a $2.5–15M private company is sellable on the owner's terms or transferable to insiders when the time comes.
Most owner-operators in this band don't need another bookkeeper, and they can't fully justify a full-time CFO. They need the architect: someone who comes in, builds the financial infrastructure the company actually runs on, and stays available at a quarterly cadence as the business changes.
The method.
Three tools, three jobs. Claude for thinking and writing. ChatGPT for general purpose. Perplexity for research with citations. AI is leverage on top of operator judgment, not a substitute for it. The judgment took 24 years to build. The leverage is new — and it's what makes the practice viable at $2.5–15M revenue, for companies that historically couldn't access this caliber of work.
The deliverables aren't new either. The 13-week cash flow model. The rolling 12-month budget-to-actual. The accounting diagnostic test matrix. These have been refined across hundreds of engagements over two decades. What's changed is the packaging — AI augmentation makes them ready to install in weeks instead of months, with workflows that transfer capability to the client's own staff rather than locking it in the advisor's head.
Tool stack
The arc.
Forty-plus years of operator depth: Touche Ross, public company CFO roles, IPO and debt offering work, and on-the-ground operating experience in Germany (1979–1981), Japan (early 1990s), and China (2017–2019). Founder of Legacy Results in 2001. Long-running facilitator of PeerSpectives, an Edward Lowe Foundation peer advisory roundtable serving Michigan owner-operators since 2008.
The writing.
Phil writes about AI-augmented finance for owner-operators at philricecpa.substack.com. The work is practitioner-first: what's actually shifting in the practice, what's working in real engagements, where AI helps and where judgment still has to do the load-bearing work.
Recent: When the baton pass goes right — on a Southeast Michigan firm that ran a clean internal succession, and what made it possible over a 10–20 year arc.
